successfully eliminated Ronaldo and Messi in charge of the award last year -
Van Dijk hopes to win the football star by winning the prestigious Liverpool
title.
Dutch defender Van Dijk had a stellar year, winning the Champions League
after a Man of the Match performance in the 2-0 win over Spurs in
Madrid as well as lifting the Super Cup courtesy of victory over Chelsea
earlier this month.But Messi's tally of 48 goals and 16 assists in all
competitions for Barcelona has people thinking that he ought to win the
coveted award for only the third time with a 51% support from fans so far securing 252 points, 28 points better off than Van Dijk.
Uefa is today
on Thursday is expected to announce the best football player of the year in
Europe.
Included in the
competition list are Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk vying for the title
against Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus and Lionel Messi Barcelona.
Since the UEFA
Award for best male player was launched in 2011, Ronaldo has won three times
(2014, 2016, 2017), while Messi has won the Prize twice (2011 and 2015).
